Real Estate Recap

Dinkin Donuts

Real Estate is back! There are lots of new projects proposed in the FreeMoreWest area! Here are some links to the rezoning petitions.

Dunkin Donuts has proposed renovating the old bank building across from Pinky’s.  This requires a rezoning because a drive through is not allowed in the pedestrian overlay district.  View site the plan here!

There are also 35 apartments proposed by Mission Properties at South Summit Street behind The World Famous Open Kitchen’s overflow parking lot.  View the site plane here!

E.C. Griffith is proposing taking down some of the old buildings and detail shop behind Pinky’s in the floodplain to build up the land and put a Quik Trip gas station and convenience store. They recently presented the plan and took input from our Winter FreeMoreWest Drop In, and the Wesley Heights Neighborhood Association has a meeting planned with Quik Trip to discuss it more in depth on March 26th at 6:30 pm.

Nichols Co. has brokered a deal with Biltmark Development for the land between McNinch and Cedar Streets along West Morehead across from Charlotte Pipe & Foundry. They are evaluating the site.

FreeMoreWest 5k Run

Now that daylight savings time has passed and spring is in the air we are pleased to say that the FreeMoreWest 5K and Kids Fun Run is almost here!  Have you registered?  If not, there is still time!  We have confirmed Roots Farm Food and The Roaming Fork food trucks and Olde Mecklenberg Brewing and Triple C Brewing for the Post Race Festival.

We would like to thank our sponsors: Charlotte Magazine, Harris Teeter, Select Physical Therapy and Wesley Village Apartments for their support.

This inaugural event will be one to remember.  Come out and support your neighborhood!

FreeMoreWest gets Latin Flavor

Don’t miss the opening of the Latin American Contemporary Art gallery opening on 1429 Bryant Street on Thursday, March 21 at 6:00pm.  FreeMoreWest is proud to be home to Charlotte’s first gallery devoted entirely to Latin American contemporary art. The first show will feature Juan Dolhare and will present compositions from two series of works, and observers can enjoy wine and food.

In other news, word on the street is that Compare Foods is opening their supermarket on Freedom late Spring/early Summer. Never been in one? You’ll be blown away by their produce section.
Stay tuned for more development from the FreeMoreWest area!

FreeMoreWest Member Profile

Mr. Smith is no stranger to FreeMoreWest.  His first memory of Freedom Drive was from 1956 when his grandfather took him to see the new Southern Electric Service Co, Inc. (SESCO) warehouse. Southern Electric, established in 1911, built the warehouse due to space limitations at its plant on W. Trade Street.  The entire company would relocate to the Freedom Drive location in 1964.  Smith joined the three-generation family business in 1968 and held many positions within the company until it merged with Jenkins Electric Co. in 2011.

Smith joined the Freedom Drive Task Force, which eventually became FreeMoreWest Partners, in the early 90’s. He served as chairman in 2000-2001 and has been the Treasurer since 2003.

Before joining SESCO he attended Tri-State University in Indiana and received his MBA from Queens University.  After college he married his high school sweetheart, Louise, in 1965.  They have three children and seven grandchildren.  Smith is currently active at Myers Park Presbyterian Church and many other charitable, civic and professional organizations.

Trey’s Fun Fact: When he joined SESCO in 1968, the four major shopping centers in Charlotte were Cotswold, Park Road, Charlottetown Mall (Metropolitan today) and Freedom Village while SouthPark area was just a cow pasture.
