Smith is no stranger to FreeMoreWest. His first memory of Freedom
Drive was from 1956 when his grandfather took him to see the new
Southern Electric Service Co, Inc. (SESCO) warehouse. Southern
Electric, established in 1911, built the warehouse due to space
limitations at its plant on W. Trade Street. The entire company
would relocate to the Freedom Drive location in 1964. Smith
joined the three-generation family business in 1968 and held many
positions within the company until it merged with Jenkins Electric Co.
Smith joined the Freedom Drive Task Force, which eventually became
FreeMoreWest Partners, in the early 90’s. He served as chairman in
2000-2001 and has been the Treasurer since 2003.
Before joining SESCO he attended Tri-State University in Indiana and
received his MBA from Queens University. After college he married
his high school sweetheart, Louise, in 1965. They have three
children and seven grandchildren. Smith is currently active at
Myers Park Presbyterian Church and many other charitable, civic and
