Here’s Our Chance to Shape Tomorrow’s Work Force

Students in 14 Charlotte-area Schools have made a special commitment to education this school year.  These students—including 34 from FreeMoreWest’s own Philip O. Berry Academy of Technology—have been actively participating in the Mayor’s Youth Employment Program (MYEP) since arriving at school in August. These students—seeking to expand their skills as they prepare for the world of work—began by attending 9 hours of skills training focusing on job readiness, customer service, and financial literacy. By the middle of the spring term, over 300 students will have been interviewed for a career-specific summer internship that will provide 20 paid hours of work for 8 weeks. In early April these students will join peers at other Charlotte-Mecklenburg high schools in a career discovery day like none other where 4,000 area youth will explore one of five career zones (Finance, Health Sciences, Human Services, Local Government, and STEM).  They will also have time to meet with representatives at a career and college fair, observe a career-oriented fashion show, and meet City officials.

How FMW Businesses Can Help

The MYEP is truly a community initiative, born from support of local educators, government leaders, and businesses alike—all groups realizing that an educated and skilled workforce is the lynchpin to Charlotte’s success. You can make a difference in the life of today’s youth while shaping tomorrow’s workforce. Here’s how you can get involved:

·       Consider hosting a creative and eager intern for the summer

·       Showcase your business or career field at the Career Discovery Day event

·       Help volunteer at a MYEP event

·       If you are not able to host an intern yourself, consider sponsoring an intern to work at a local small business or nonprofit                 organization

Contact us today to learn more about how you and your company can get involved. We are happy to customize your interaction with the program so that together we can lay the foundation for Charlotte’s tomorrow. Find us on the web at http://myep.charlottenc.gov or email us at myep@charlottenc.gov.
