DPJ Residential, led by D. Porter Jones, has purchased the long-vacant 1.6-acre parcel off Freedom Drive between Walnut & Woodruff Roads, across from Pinky’s, or the site of the former Pterodactyl (for those older Charlotteans). The plan is to break ground the week of February 24th for construction of a 77-unit “boutique” apartment community called Asbury Flats, named after Louis H. Asbury, an architect from the 1920s who was responsible for many of the historic buildings the still exist today throughout Wesley Heights.
With only 77 units, the developer believes Asbury Flats will attract prospective renters who are seeking a more intimate and community-based living experience. The complex will feature a salt-water swimming pool, outdoor kitchen, wi-fi/resident lounge, fully-equipped fitness center in a location that is highly walkable to numerous amenities, including the Stewart Creek greenway. The overall look and feel of the development will stay true to the roots of the neighborhood combining the industrial past with a modern flare. Leasing is expected to start in early to mid-2016.
